I get called when a panel that ran fine for three years starts throwing intermittent faults nobody can pin down — a green-corroded terminal at an anaerobic digester (AD) headworks, a dust-packed VFD (variable-frequency drive) at an aggregates plant, a dripping disconnect at a materials recovery facility (MRF) tip floor. Almost always the panel was specced for a clean electrical room and then bolted up in a place that eats electronics. This is the working document I hand a maintenance lead so the next enclosure survives the room it actually lives in. Match the box to the environment, then keep it that way. Print it, walk the panel, check the boxes.

SAFETY HEADER — read before you open anything LOTO first. Establish a zero-energy state before any hands-on work inside a panel. Lock out and tag out the feeder, verify absence of voltage at the incoming lugs with a meter you just proved on a known source, and account for stored energy. On drives, the DC bus holds a lethal charge after power-down — wait out the drive's stated discharge time (often several minutes; check against your drive's manual) and verify bus voltage is down before touching anything. Energized work is a last resort. If you must open a live panel to troubleshoot (measurements that can't be taken de-energized), that's an energized-work task: arc-flash PPE (personal protective equipment) per the panel's label, boundaries established, a second person, and written authorization. Do not treat "just popping the door to look" as free. Hazardous-area classification — biogas / flammable atmosphere. At AD sites, biogas-fed engine rooms, gas-holder areas, and anywhere methane can accumulate, the area may be classified Class I, Division 1 or 2 per NEC (National Electrical Code) 500 (or Zone 0/1/2 per NEC 505). That changes everything about the enclosure: purge/pressurization systems, sealed fittings, rated components, and conduit seals are not optional and not your call to reclassify in the field. Confirm the area classification drawing before you modify a thing. If a panel sits in a classified area and you're adding a vent, a fan, or a purge, you've changed its protection method — it must stay compliant.
